Cost should not be a barrier to participation. Hockey matters.

Update: Thank you for your support. 30-30-30 is over and by all measures I’d call it a success. More than $1,100 raised means more opportunities for kids to experience the joy of participation in team sports. Click here for a list of donors.

On April 16, I am turning 30. That’s 30 days from the launch of this page.
Looking back at my life, I’ve been incredibly lucky. I grew up in a stable home with a great and loving family. I got a good education, met and married awonderful womanand now we’re raising a beautiful daughter together.
So to mark this milestone birthday, I want to do something meaningful. But I need your help.
In the next 30 days, I want 30 people to donate $30 to a good cause. Once I add my $30, that’s $930. A modest sum but enough to make a difference.
It’s that simple

What is the cause of choice?
I spent four of the last five years coaching kids’ hockey in theOttawa Centre Minor Hockey Association. I’m a huge believer in the power of sport as a force for good in the lives of kids. I know that sounds really cliche but it’s true.
I watched kids grow and mature before my eyes. They learned valuable life lessons about teamwork and leadership and they had a boatload of fun doing it.
OCMHA encompasses a big area in the centre of Ottawa, including Centretown, the Glebe and Old Ottawa South. Hockey’s an expensive sport and that area includes a lot of families that just don’t have enough money to register their kids, let alone pay for gear.

That’s enough to buy a few sets of used equipment. Is it going to change the world? No, but I can tell you from experience that it’ll probably change a kid’s life, or at least give him/her some fantastic memories and valuable lessons that last a lifetime.
Ok, I am ready to donate
OCMHA isn’t a registered charity so there’s no tax break for this. There’s no real mechanism in place for such a donation so I’m asking that donations be made through my PayPal account. There are donation links at the top and bottom of this page. If you’re worried that’s a tad sketchy, I hope the letter below from Eric Lay, OCMHA’s president, sets your mind at ease.
